Laura was here with her little boy, Owen. They had just been to an autism workshop – one of the follow-up sessions children receive after they get an autism diagnosis with us. “Every school teacher should visit Caudwell Children’s Autism Service. Then they’d understand what it’s like for neurodiverse kids in the classroom,” she said. She looked down at Owen. “The first time we came here was life-changing. It was like a lightbulb was switched on in my brain.” “Why was that?” Marta, one of our team, asked. “Because this is one of the only places that truly understands Owen,” she said. “Everything here is designed with him in mind. “To make him feel completely at ease. “We wish everywhere was like this. But people don’t get what it’s like to be neurodiverse in a neurotypical world. “I wish we could change that.” As Laura and Owen went off to their next session, those words were ringing in our team’s ears. It’s stories like Laura & Owen’s that spur us on every day. That’s why we launched the Join Our MOVEment campaign. Are you like us? Do you think we need to make the world more autism-aware?
