Louise Bennett was born in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, and raised by her mother after her father’s death. She began writing at a young age, having her first poetry published in the national newspaper The Daily Gleaner. Bennett was a pioneer of writing in a literary version of Jamaican patois. This is a rich and creative language, with English and West African influences, that emerged from the troubled history of British enslavement of African people. She experienced criticism for this, as at the time it was rare for British and Jamaican readers to encounter anything other than standard British English in mainstream literature. Her first book of poetry was called Dialect Verses. In 1943 Bennett was awarded a British Council scholarship to study at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the first black student to do so. Shortly after, she began working as a BBC radio host hosting a thirty-minute programme called Caribbean Carnival. She returned to Jamaica in 1954.
On her return, Bennett immersed herself in studying Jamaican folklore and oral tradition. In Jamaica she became known as ‘Miss Lou’. The nickname originated from a radio show she presented from 1965 to 1982, which showcased the country’s culture and invited guest performers. Her most famous collection of poetry, Jamaica Labrish, was published in 1966. Instantly recognisable by her traditional way of dress and her catchphrase ‘walk good’ – a patois expression for ‘goodbye’ – Bennett-Coverley became one of the most famous people in Jamaica. She was a passionate advocate of the country’s artistic expression and the adoption of patois as a national language. She served as a national Cultural Ambassador and in 2001 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Merit of Jamaica. Her career path and trailblazing use of Jamaican patois in her poetry is said to have influenced numerous poets such as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Valerie Bloom and Kamau Brathwaite. She died in Toronto, Canada, in 2006.

Dear Mervelee, Today (8 July 2023), across the UK, paramedics are being celebrated to mark International Paramedics Day. At London’s Air Ambulance Charity, we spoke to two paramedics, David O’Toole and Keiren Rodwell, who have recently begun their 12-month secondment with our service from London Ambulance Service.
In addition to providing life-saving pre-hospital care as part of London’s Air Ambulance’s advanced trauma team, and driving the rapid response cars, part of a paramedic’s role is to operate from the control room. Here they are responsible for dispatching London’s Air Ambulance to the most critically injured people in London, 24 hours a day.
David O’Toole We asked David what advice he’d give to anyone thinking about becoming a paramedic. There are lots of routes to becoming a paramedic now – such as joining the ambulance service as a trainee/apprentice – and you don’t have to have any prior medical knowledge to apply.
It’s a tough job but also incredibly rewarding. It’s a huge privilege to be there for people in their darkest moments and to have people put their trust in us to care for them.
If I could give any advice, I think it would be to put the patient at the heart of everything you do and always remember that while someone may be a patient, they are also a person. Keiren Rodwell Keiren explains why he wanted to join London’s Air Ambulance Charity. London’s Air Ambulance is a world-class service. I have always been impressed with the excellence displayed by all staff who work for London’s Air Ambulance Charity.
It’s an amazing opportunity to be a part of a team who are leading the way in pre-hospital care. Working here was a goal of mine before I had even moved from Australia, due to its international reputation: I believe there is no better learning opportunity. Read more about David and Keiren’s stories on our website.
A big thank you to you all for your support.

WE need to go back to when the Legal Team contacted me on behalf of Bates Wells and Braithwaite. I will get a petition about www.leyf.org.uk ABUSERS RINGS
Because I used my laptop/Google accounts to set up the petition, it’s in my name (which I didn’t want!), but no worries, any radio interviews or media publicity will need to be done by you. It may be in my name, but you will be fronting this petition. In the first instance, I am not a Jamaican, and secondly, and more importantly, you are the best contender to Miss Lou’s crown.

I meet the Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin at Housing for Women AGM in April 2014. This is where I meet the Rev for the first time and learnt of her connections in Westmoreland, Jamaica, West Indies. If Nationwide wants the full story, they will have to RESEARCH. So, for clarity let Nationwide understand that there is a saying where I come from “The Higher the Monkey Climb the More it Ass Expose to Danger”. Nationwide can make of this what they will. But based on Nationwide DISCRIMINATION against me, I view this email as cyberbullying. Because, Nationwide failed to address the TERRORISM against me after I went into the Brixton Branch to conduct Business.
As far as I am concerned anything Nationwide do without resolving the HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT they created on the 28th April 2023 will trigger me.
I do REVIEWS and don’t need Nationwide with the ATTITUDES they took after I went in on 28/4/2023 towards me. Let me mention Jennifer Thomas who sent me the letter and Jayne Finch who called my phone and terminated the call. She said she was recording. I sent my recording link to Nationwide.
If the treatment of those who started this SORDID affair at Brixton Branch can behave the way they did towards me. Why should I be coerced into voting for anyone to come treat me like they did my ANCESTORS on the SLAVE SHIPS. The Windrush Generation facing the same as when they were greeted with “No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish”. But it’s the BLACKS treating their fellow human being worse than the welcome they got.
Let me advise Nationwide to discuss the matter with the MANAGER before destroying the Building Society beyond redemption.
I am still open to resolving this matter, but I refuse to take anymore SYSTEMATIC DISCRIMINATION after the death of my mother with dementia.
View in browserMervelee, this Diabetes Week, will you help more people with diabetes get the care and advice they desperately need? It’s my job to provide vital support through the Diabetes UK helpline, and every day I hear that diabetes can feel like a never-ending stream of numbers. Blood sugar, HbA1c, blood pressure, how many carbs were in that sandwich again? I know, sometimes, it can feel too much. But people living with diabetes are more than their numbers. And that’s why my team works so hard to provide the best possible advice and support. Every day, I speak with brilliant, inspiring people living full lives – but also facing all kinds of challenges, day in day out. So many feel stressed and anxious. People with diabetes need urgent care and support that goes beyond the numbers, especially to help change diet and get the right treatments. Your gift today can help to fund more trained helpline supervisors like me, so we can give life-changing support every day. Evidence suggests that nearly half of people with diabetes experience difficulties managing their diabetes. People tell me they need support with so many elements of diabetes, whether it’s nutrition, different medications, the latest technology or their emotional wellbeing. I’m constantly learning and doing in-depth research to ensure I give the best possible advice. But my team can only do this with the help of supporters like you. £15 could help us answer more calls and provide a lifeline for people with diabetes Your support will change lives – it’s that simple. With the right support at the right time, many life-altering diabetes complications can be prevented. Mervelee, you will know how serious diabetes is. More than 5 million people across the UK live with the daily challenges of diabetes. That’s why, as we approach the end of Diabetes Week, we’re calling on our whole community to stand up for people with diabetes. And you can play your part today. Every donation is critical. Your gift will ensure more people get support when they need it most, so they don’t feel like just another number. I’d also like to take this chance to thank you so much for your continued support for people with diabetes. Without you, my work just wouldn’t be possible. I hope you will consider giving again today. Thank you, Dominic Sauboorah Helpline Supervisor at Diabetes UK Thank you, Dominic Sauboorah Helpline Supervisor at Diabetes UK PS. Greetings Family
We are proud to present the upcoming Pan Afrikan Sports & Culture Day (PASCD) 2023, this edutainment event combined with the sport element of track and field for our children, grandchildren and family, to full joy this on-going family event for the last seventeen years.
Our theme is centred around Stephen Lawrence. As you may be aware it is 30 years this year since Stephen’s senseless racist, murder, and we refuse to let this be forgotten.
We have the pleasure of Dr Neville Lawrence giving a speech along with handing out the medals to our winners (however everyone’s a winner in our eyes).
We hope to see you there.
Please feel free to save the date and to share this email, along with this flyer to help spread the word about this glorious event.
