My name is Mervelee Ionie aka Ratty Nembhard-Myers-Tomlinson who is the wife of 100 year old Arnold Ebenezer Tomlinson. The purpose of investing in MAPS is to share our “Story Boards” about the “Systemic Discrimination” we experienced after the death of my mother with dementia. Today the 6th August 2023 is Jamaica’s 61st Independence. My eldest grandson Donte Legister is celebrating his 21st birthday.

My website will reveal how Mervelee Myers survive 31 years of “SYSTEMIC DISCRIMINATION” in the Mother Country and those involved in the “Bottom Up Top Down” approach leaving me and my husband victims of hate crimes of monstrous proportions.

I am amazed at how much I have endured the past years after the death of “MAMA LOU”. I recalled Dr. Laura Crawford advising me to seek counselling to find out why I react the way I do to certain situations. The fact that I survive to see my website MAPS become “My Vision” that I created from scratch and which was stolen and in use online. I can testify that for anyone who is thinking of giving up, take a page out of MERVELEE MYERS Book “IN HONOUR OF STRONG WOMEN EVERYWHERE” that there is hope for a better tomorrow.

Colonization In Reverse (1966)

Wat a joyful news, miss Mattie,
I feel like me heart gwine burs

By de hundred, by de tousan
From country and from town,
By de ship-load, by de plane-load
Jamaica is Englan boun.

Dem a pour out a Jamaica
Everybody future plan
Is fe get a big-time job
An settle in de mother lan.

What a islan! What a people!
Man an woman, old an young
Jus a pack dem bag an baggage
An tun history upside dung!

Some people doan like travel,
But fe show dem loyalty
Dem all a open up cheap-fare-
To-Englan agency.

An week by week dem shippin off
Dem countryman like fire,
Fe immigrate an populate
De seat a de Empire.

Oonoo see how life is funny,
Oonoo see de tunabout?
Jamaica live fe box bread
Out a English people mout’.

For wen dem ketch a Englan,
An start play dem different role,
Some will settle down to work
An some will settle fe de dole.

Jane say de dole is not too bad
Because dey payin she
Two pounds a week fe seek a job
Dat suit her dignity.

Me say Jane will never fine work
At de rate how she dah look,
For all day she stay pon Aunt Fan couch
An read love-story book.

Wat a devilment a Englan!
Dem face war an brave de worse,
But me wonderin how dem gwine stan

About the poet

Louise Bennett was born in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, and raised by her mother after her father’s death. She began writing at a young age, having her first poetry published in the national newspaper The Daily Gleaner. Bennett was a pioneer of writing in a literary version of Jamaican patois. This is a rich and creative language, with English and West African influences, that emerged from the troubled history of British enslavement of African people. She experienced criticism for this, as at the time it was rare for British and Jamaican readers to encounter anything other than standard British English in mainstream literature. Her first book of poetry was called Dialect Verses. In 1943 Bennett was awarded a British Council scholarship to study at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the first black student to do so. Shortly after, she began working as a BBC radio host hosting a thirty-minute programme called Caribbean Carnival. She returned to Jamaica in 1954.

On her return, Bennett immersed herself in studying Jamaican folklore and oral tradition. In Jamaica she became known as ‘Miss Lou’. The nickname originated from a radio show she presented from 1965 to 1982, which showcased the country’s culture and invited guest performers. Her most famous collection of poetry, Jamaica Labrish, was published in 1966. Instantly recognisable by her traditional way of dress and her catchphrase ‘walk good’ – a patois expression for ‘goodbye’ – Bennett-Coverley became one of the most famous people in Jamaica. She was a passionate advocate of the country’s artistic expression and the adoption of patois as a national language. She served as a national Cultural Ambassador and in 2001 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Merit of Jamaica. Her career path and trailblazing use of Jamaican patois in her poetry is said to have influenced numerous poets such as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Valerie Bloom and Kamau Brathwaite. She died in Toronto, Canada, in 2006.

To show the impact your generosity can have on families in real need I wanted to share some of their own words with you today:

The Admiral Nurse’s knowledge and expertise about dementia reassured me that they had an understanding of what I was going through as a carer.

Speaking to someone who totally understands the situation I am in was an absolute lifesaver. I was at breaking point before I picked up the telephone and called. It put everything into a clearer picture and gave me a way forward. I felt in despair before this and afterwards like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

By making a donation today you can help give more families this vital, expert support.

Your kind support today will mean more families affected by dementia can live as well as possible, for as long as possible - thank you.

Dear Deborah,
I hope your well.
I am writing to you, as there seems to be an ongoing disagreement between yourself
and your neighbour Mervelee. As I understand it this has been going on for sometime
now. I am sure you`ll agree, it would be in everyones interest if this situation were to
be resolved as soon as possible, as it is affecting my dad greatly.
I believe we can only achieve this by coming together for an informal chat, to sort out
the differences between yourself and Mervelee.
Please find enclosed my contact deails for you to give a call at your earliest
convenience.
When you call, if I do not pick up the call peronally please leave a message and
contact number, and I will get back to you.
I look to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Trevor Tomlinson Tel no: 0778859310

Dear Mervelee, Today (8 July 2023), across the UK, paramedics are being celebrated to mark International Paramedics Day. At London’s Air Ambulance Charity, we spoke to two paramedics, David O’Toole and Keiren Rodwell, who have recently begun their 12-month secondment with our service from London Ambulance Service.

In addition to providing life-saving pre-hospital care as part of London’s Air Ambulance’s advanced trauma team, and driving the rapid response cars, part of a paramedic’s role is to operate from the control room. Here they are responsible for dispatching London’s Air Ambulance to the most critically injured people in London, 24 hours a day.

David O’Toole We asked David what advice he’d give to anyone thinking about becoming a paramedic.
There are lots of routes to becoming a paramedic now – such as joining the ambulance service as a trainee/apprentice – and you don’t have to have any prior medical knowledge to apply.

It’s a tough job but also incredibly rewarding. It’s a huge privilege to be there for people in their darkest moments and to have people put their trust in us to care for them.

If I could give any advice, I think it would be to put the patient at the heart of everything you do and always remember that while someone may be a patient, they are also a person.
Keiren Rodwell Keiren explains why he wanted to join London’s Air Ambulance Charity.
London’s Air Ambulance is a world-class service. I have always been impressed with the excellence displayed by all staff who work for London’s Air Ambulance Charity.

It’s an amazing opportunity to be a part of a team who are leading the way in pre-hospital care. Working here was a goal of mine before I had even moved from Australia, due to its international reputation: I believe there is no better learning opportunity.  Read more about David and Keiren’s stories on our website.

A big thank you to you all for your support.
