Introduction

In November 2011, the Government commissioned an independent review to consider how best to strengthen qualifications and career pathways in the early years and childcare sectors. The final report, written by Cathy Nutbrown, Professor of Education at the University of Sheffield, has now been published and makes a series of important recommendations.

Professor Nutbrown considers that better qualifications and more qualified practitioners are key to high-quality early years provision and her key recommendation is that all staff should hold a relevant Level 3 qualification before being considered qualified to work in an early years setting.

The report, Foundations for Quality, also calls for Level 3 qualifications to be strengthened to include more on child development and play, more on special educational needs and disability, more on inclusivity and diversity, and a focus on the birth to seven age range.

What exactly does the report recommend and what is its rationale and model for change?

Hello Mervelee,

You’re a part of a community at Parkinson’s UK, but not just in the UK, across the world.

11 April is World Parkinson’s Day. We’re talking about what it’s like to live with Parkinson’s, hearing poetry from budding writers in our community, and we’re lighting up city centres and key buildings across the UK blue.

If you want to get involved with spreading awareness of Parkinson’s this April, find out more here.

Get involved

We don’t just advocate for our community in April though. We work with an amazing team of volunteers to improve health, social care, benefit and transport services for people with Parkinson’s throughout the year.

We think it’s a brilliant community to be a part of. Don’t just take our word for it though:

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 14 years ago at 46. Eventually I lost my job and a certain amount of self esteem and worth, but my desire to speak out about this new world I was forced to inhabit gave me back this worth and self esteem. I feel that I’m contributing to a bigger and worthier cause than just ME. I’m not driven by targets and deadlines. I contribute at my own speed and within my newly discovered abilities. I can do this. It makes a difference and I love it.” John, Campaigns volunteer

Now is an exciting time to join our volunteering community. Do you want to help? Over the coming months we’ll be running campaign training sessions.

At these sessions you’ll learn how to campaign. We’ll teach you how to find decision makers in your local area, how to recruit other volunteers to Parkinson’s UK and how to share your story in a powerful way with decision makers to deliver change.

If you’re interested in becoming part of our volunteer community sign up for a session and we’ll get back to you next month with details of how to join the session.

Thanks,

Grace

Mervelee,

Covid-19 has exposed the vast inequalities baked into the way we educate children in the UK.

It’s time to question what’s driving education: is it the needs of children and young people, or something else entirely?

Join us at 6pm on Thursday 7th April to examine how we can create the education system our children truly deserve.

🙋Thursday 7th April: What’s wrong with our education system?

Are we genuinely providing children and young people with the education they need to deal with the huge challenges ahead? Are we finding the spark in every child?

Have schools become exam factories? What do we want for our children, here and now – and in the future?

What’s the point of education in the 21st century?

Joining us to discuss are this and much more are four education thinkers and doers:

• Peter Moss, Emeritus Professor of Early Childhood Provision at UCL Institute of Education, University College London

• Christine Merrick, former Ofsted inspector and ex-headteacher with nearly fifty years’ experience in early years and primary education in the UK and abroad

• Robin Duckett, founder of the Sightlines Initiative for creative practice in UK early education

• Madeleine Holt, education campaigner and filmmaker in innovative primary and secondary schools through Schools on Screen.

Join us at 6pm on Thursday 7th April – and keep an eye out for our next session coming in May on solutions .

The ideas that will change the world are out there among young people, waiting to be heard.

The Future We Want is a special podcast series from Compass and the Orwell Youth Foundation that amplifies these vital voices.

Check out the scorching latest episodes now:

🏠Rosaleen Tite Ahern discusses place and the hopes and failures of social housing with Guardian journalist John Harris

🚨Jessica Tunks discusses knife crime and reimagined public services with Professor Donna Hall

Episodes are hosted on the It’s Bloody Complicated feed on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify and all major platforms.

Subscribe to It’s Bloody Complicated today and never miss an episode.

Speaking of big ideas, I wanted to point you towards three events Compass is helping host:

• At 12.30pm on Wednesday 20th April, we’re launching a new report I’ve written for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung: Power from the People? Citizens’ Assemblies in the UK and Ireland.

• Then at 5.30pm on Wednesday 20th April, I’ll chair a conversation between Stewart Lansley and Professor Kate Pickett, author of The Spirit Level, about Stewart’s book The Richer, The Poorer and how we break Britain’s 200-year ‘high inequality–high poverty’ cycle.

• On Wednesday 18th May, Compass presents Time to Get Serious about Tactical Voting? at Union Street in Sheffield. Speakers will include Jon Cruddas MP, the Guardian’s Zoe Williams and local constituency representatives from Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens.

Those last two events come to you as part of the brilliant Festival of Debate.

The festival features speakers like Armando Ianucci, Gloria Steinem, George Monbiot and former It’s Bloody Complicated guest Ece Temelkuran.

Register for them now.

If we’re going to achieve the future we want, the ideas, hopes and dreams of the young people who will make up that future will need to be heard.

Join us on April 7th to ask what’s wrong with how young people are educated in the UK – and what we can do about it.

See you there.

In hope,

Frances

Discover the stories of women in your family history

Celebrate Women’s History Month by discovering more about the women in your family history.

You can find fascinating stories of inspiring women in our records, like Adelaide Knight, a disabled suffragette and equal rights campaigner whose husband is in the 1901 census with Adelaide’s surname, having taken it when they got married, unusual at the time, and still today.

Top Tip: When entering a woman’s name in a family tree, we recommend you use her maiden name as this often connects women to their original families in our records.

In hope,

Frances

Last year, our incredible team made every step count and together raised over £2.1 million pounds to create a better future for everybody living with diabetes and to fund more life-changing research into new treatments and a cure. And, this year we’re confident our amazing team of steppers will go even further.

You can also join our supportive community over in the Facebook group – there’s over 12,000 fellow steppers in there, supporting each other both before and throughout the challenge.

So whether you decide to take on one million steps, half a million, or maybe even more, we’d be so grateful to have you on the team again, as we continue to step for everybody affected by diabetes.

Dear Mervelee,

From finding new treatments to identifying key genes involved in cancer development, the past 120 years are full of remarkable stories. Today, these discoveries inspire scientists to better understand and treat cancer.

As part of our Cancer Revolutionaries partnership with Guardian Labs, we share a series of articles that analyse the innovations that could transform cancer care, but also the challenges we face to cure the disease.

Plus, the Government has launched a public consultation that will shape a new 10-Year Cancer Plan for England. This is an opportunity for people affected by cancer to define what having cancer will look like in 2032. We’ve created guidance to help you fill out the consultation step-by-step.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Aiming High: Changing Lives Strategy Event

What we have done and what comes next

In developing our new Strategy ‘Aiming High; Changing Lives, 2021-2026’, we had over 1,700 interactions with staff, service users, carers, partners, families and community organisations.

We made a commitment to holding regular six-monthly events led by the Chair and Chief Executive to continue talking and acting on how we are making progress to achieve our Strategic Ambitions.

At this first event we will:

1. Share progress on the strategy since its launch in September 2021

2. Continue to co-produce the qualitative (personal experience) measures for the Trust Strategy, to monitor its success

3. Share ways to get involved in reviewing and setting Trust priorities for 2023-2024

4. Have a question and answer session on the strategy with our panel

Further information to follow, but please keep this date and time in your diary, as we would really like you to be there.

Best wishes,

Anisa Singh

Thanks to the #3Judges from the #EmploymentTribunals that’s exactly what happened to me. When I asked #GillSpringer about the knowledge she has about Disabilities Legislations to teach the Apprentice, the Judge tell me she don’t need to know about the Rules of Law. If you think I’m joking go to https://www.gov.uk/…/ms-m-myers-v-london-early-years…. The 2nd time there is a miscarriage of justice at the ET. Because the Judges don’t know what they are doing. Just check Dr Maria Hudson Research Paper The Experience of Discriminationon on Multiple Grounds for #PolicyStudiesInstitute recommended to Acas. I am part of the research. The garbage in rivers is more than just an eyesore because it can possibly contaminate our drinking water and threaten nature, our lives, and that of our loved ones. Even a piece of litter thrown on the street may contribute to the piling garbage in our rivers and gullies.Clean, healthy rivers reduce human health risk and improved quality of life. As recreational activities increases, tourists will be attracted. Thus, affecting both the economy and well-being of the community. It’s all up to us to make it happen. As human and industrial waste and garbage add up to the river pollution, each of us can do small things to help clean up our river and that adds up to the pollution solution. It would be rather be AMISS of me if I didn’t take time out of my Busy Schedules to acknowledge the fact that I was informed about the passing of another of the Stalwarts from TOWNHEAD now Truro. Mass Aidrey (forgive wrong spellings) Lawrence. The fact that Bunny Lawrence was one of my Boys back in the days when WE didn’t have a care in the world to worry about is enough. Let me see if I can recall the others? In order of Seniority: Wilbert aka Bunny, Cordellia aka Puncy, Sunshine & Baby Lunce (plz don’t blame me if I get any wrong, but I don’t recall the correct names of the 2 younger ones?) They were too young when I was doing Enumerations & Population Census. There was wife Ms Pearl, Mother Ms Brown, Huskodo, Linval aka Darney Ghost & I am positive Ragged 11… was also Family? Last time I recall any memory of Mass Aidrey was when I attended the Wake Night of Mr Dixon in January 2014. I know Mass Balis used to go play Dominoes with Mass Aidrey. My condolences to Mass Aidrey’s FAMILY & Friends at this sad time. RIP! Whatever Games U are into, keep on playing for Old Times Sakes?

Stupid Hilda Miller come tell me not to bring any of my ideas from other @LEYF nurseries to her Baby BIB. Di same Baby dat she ABUSE & NEGLECTED. I am going to make sure she gets charge for Play-JAH-Racism, et al presenting my WORK as her own in the 2 year old Pilot Project for the Government. Later on my Lunch Break, because I have to take one because of my DISABILITIES & not deny myself like Maria Freeman done & Stacey-Jane Whitfield have to comment about on the 19th January 2016… I have DIABETES! However LEYF Nurseries Contract Section 6. Hours of Work says it all. Now I understand what Voice: the union for education professionals Solicitor Arwen Makin meant when she told me not to Appeal the Trumped up ALLEGATIONS that breach the Human Rights & Data Protection Acts 1998…? Because it’s written in their Contract. My #FIGHT4JUSTICE is to ensure why these Contracts are not reviewed & updated. Don’t worry I have Goat Mouth & I wrote that all my Fellow JAMAICANS that dem buy out fi DISCRIMINATE Against me time would come. Well Crisella Rattary-Brown time has certainly come! More about she & Audrey later & what they are going through at the hands of that Nicola at CON-Serve-A- Tart in Blackheath. I don’t have a job so my Talents & Creativity towards my CPPDP must not go to waste. So when they continue to use my Intellectual Property in the form of My Ugly Mug to promote their Organisations, do they think I am going to let them get away with the Negative Narratives that can push me back into DEPRESSION if I am not Vigilant? Ok so all those expecting me to write Reports for them to Benefit & sending me to go do Trainings for another Piece of Tokenistic Paper not worth the Ink in which it is Written, can go stick it. I have enough to decorate my Living Room & Social Media! Mi gone until mi cum back come write the ongoing Saga of why 3 Staff from the same Nursery Resign. Memba mi tell dem say “a nuh Bush hab EARS, is Wo/Man stand up eina Bush a Listen? So for those at BIB that were offended when I told them to do their Research about Multigenerational Working, is the same way I make it my Own Business Agenda to know the lastest. I am always Learning from the Masters/Mistresses of Good/Evil. I started out with the Daily Express from I met my Husband TOM in 2001!

Can any1 tell me the reasons why some of US Black People let others tun us into Idiots? Now this is the story of 1 who has been programmed fi tun Traitor & I don’t know wat she expect fi get outa it… Imagine sumady come deliver message, pretend dem lef & gone & cum back later cum mek sum strange chat. Because I am Jamaican true & truthful I knew exactly wat just happened. I know the story about Bush have Ears, but is not Bush have Ears is Sumady stand up eina Bush a Listen. So I said enough, only fi di Idiot Sell out JA gal fi cum asks mi wat being Jamaican have to do with it… So I told her I am More Jamaican than her because me Older than her.

So they get her involved in ordering me about & I told dem me tiyad a di 3rd Party sinting. The ting dat hot me di most is dish Idiot gal can’t even speak proper English & think English is adding an H at the beginning of every word that starts with A. Then have the gall come tell me not to speak in my JA accent. Me nuh know wey di Idiot did dey dat she nuh know bout Rastamouse? & a come tell me she haffi guh practice fi read it. Wat hat me di Fossy Face Gall never born a UK but JA & come yah when she a Big Woman. Face bleach off till it look like dem pickney when mi did a grow up who hab Fossy Foot. When dem rub/scratch di sore dem, dem bruise off & scab a grow back pon di Fossy Foot. Believe me a suh di face tan & it Sick stomach.

Me nuh know how further har stomach a guh up har face fi guh tell har how-di-do & not even celebs me nuh see wid dem kina stomach deh. Den di False Batty just a Push off & mi nuh know if she nuh realise everybaddy mouth a chat. Well I am making plans fi cum out lef dem place gi dem b4 she & dem KILL off My HUSBAND & I. So then the Evil 1 will have no1 else fi tun pon but har rassclaat Fossy Face, Push Out Stomach False Arse & she will know how it feels to be on the receiving end. She better believe I won’t give up my Rights as she is claiming & bring my GRB guh gi dem. Suh she can carry on treat me like CRIMINAL by dem dictate. 1 day she will feel their hands but it will be too late. Pity she couldn’t get rid of the SLAVERY MENTALITY that she have to be Bleaching herself to tun like dem in colour & deeds. & say dem a Christian! God going to punish all of them & they shall be rewarded by their deeds & work. God kept my TOM 2 day & TOM is blessed so I will not have to go thru the anguish of coming him to find him lifeless. I take my Papa & Mama as marks of how God treats His chosen People. I survived my ordeals & I will be there to show them what I am made of until I find a way out. But I’ll be sharing my Story with the World as Evil should not prosper!

This morning for the 1st time in over a year my Tom has a HYPO. I was wavering my mind if I should call in or what. I quickly sorted him out, left him eating & rushed out. I was concerned because usually I’d not leave until he fully recovered. Got in explain to the Authoritarian that I needed to check on him, but she didn’t respond. I later reaffirmed I meant calling him to find out how is when I say check on him just in case she thought I meant literally. I got a grunt as response. Once more I was pushed from pillar to post & just got on with it.

I was bolstering the morals of others who were been carried along with the tide. My stress incontinence is back & I am trying to cope as best I can only to be told to Hurry up each time I need to go… The levels of provocation been chucked in my face is more than I can bear. & this would make any Christian cuss bad wuds. But still I’ll not yield to temptations but sing Christian Songs instead.

But what really got to me is the fact that I was not allowed the time to check my Husband to see how he was after I had to rush out & leave him. So imagine my state of mind them winding me up & trying to keep my focus & not think of what could have been? I never got to call Tom until 12.15. So I left the house at 7.00 & in between that time 12.15 I was scared stiff.

I got home from 1 staff meeting the day he locked himself out collecting a parcel. Luckily he was rescued by kind neighbours. This only left me to asks where is the HUMANITY in those gutless people who GOD has put in charge of US to torment US. That U can’t get even 5 minutes to check if Ur Husband is ok. Jackass say di world nuh level when some can get away with Slow MURDER of the Innocent.

This is the next story I’ll be writing because if Authoritarian can give U a Sanction that is so Soul Destroying that it leaves U feeling SICK when they don’t know nothing about you… And now have the nerves/gall to come now turn around saying how Experienced that person is… I am in utter despair!

Does any 1 know how to get in touch with HOWARD KING? He is related to my Mama from my Granny’s side & lived in St Catherine. His gran Lorreta King-Walker lived in Town & I can’t recall the address now even thou I went there. He once worked at D&G. I’d love to link even thou I last saw him when we were kids! Oh guess I better mentioned my cousin Jennifer Chambers whose mum was Marjorie Morris & they lived at Alexander Road Kingston. I’d love to link with these people if possible b4 I go back to JA. Last time I saw Jenny, Patsy & the Boys was at their mums funeral at BRUNTY near Beaston Spring.
