On this day

I was delighted to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton to Jamaica and to the Office of the Prime Minister for a courtesy call this morning.

Jamaica has grown and matured over the last 60 years and with this maturity has come the burgeoning desire for full political independence and self determination.

In this our 60th year of Independence, we are very proud of our history and what we have so far achieved. However, we recognize that there is much more to be done to realize our true potential as a nation.

I expressed to the Duke, that in this regard, it is inevitable that we will move towards becoming a republic in fulfillment of the will of the people of Jamaica and our ambitions of becoming an independent, developed and prosperous country.
